FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS

  • What is the burn time of my candle?
The burn time of a candle purchased from Routher & Co can vary depending on the size and type of candle. Our standard 270g candles have a burn time of 40+ hours. Factors such as location and room size can also impact burn time. In a drafty or large room, the candle may burn faster due to increased airflow. Conversely, in a smaller, enclosed space, the candle may burn more slowly. It's important to burn your candle for at least 3 to 4 hours the first time to allow the wax to melt evenly across the surface, and to trim the wick to 6.35mm before each use to ensure an optimal burn time. We recommend burning our candles for a maximum of 6 hours. For personalised recommendations based on your specific candle and environment, feel free to reach out to our customer service team.
  • What type of wax do you use?
At Routher & Co, we take pride in our commitment to producing high-quality, natural soy wax candles. Unlike paraffin wax, which is derived from petroleum, our candles are made from soybeans, making them biodegradable, renewable, and more environmentally friendly. Our soy wax candles also burn cleaner and longer than traditional paraffin candles, emitting less soot and toxins into the air. Additionally, soy wax has a lower melting point, allowing for a longer-lasting candle that distributes fragrance more effectively. Our dedication to using natural soy wax reflects our ethos of sustainability and providing our customers with a healthier, more eco-friendly alternative to traditional candles.
  • What is tunnelling in a candle?
Tunnelling in a candle refers to the hollowing out of the wax around the wick, creating a tunnel-like hole down the centre of the candle. This occurs when a candle is not burned for a sufficient amount of time during each use (3 to 4 hours), causing the wax to melt and pool unevenly. At Routher & Co, we are committed to providing high-quality candles that are designed to burn evenly and effectively prevent tunnelling. Our candles are made with premium soy wax and carefully positioned wicks to ensure a clean and consistent burn, allowing you to fully enjoy the fragrance and ambiance of our products. Additionally, we recommend following the proper burning guidelines, such as allowing the candle to create a full melt pool during each use, to prevent tunnelling and maximise the lifespan of your candle.
  • Why is my candle tunnelling and how do I fix it?
Candle tunnelling occurs when a candle burns down the centre, leaving a thick wall of wax around the edge. This can be caused by not allowing the candle to burn for a long enough period of time on the initial burn, or not trimming the wick before each subsequent use. To fix it, try burning the candle for a longer period of time during the initial burn (typically 3 to 4 hours for larger candles) to allow the wax to melt all the way to the edge. Also, remember to trim the wick to 6.35mm before lighting the candle each time. This will help prevent tunnelling and ensure an even burn for the life of the candle. Refer to the candle dust cover for instructions. At Routher & Co, we recommend following these tips to maximise the burn time and overall enjoyment of our high-quality candles.
